Meet the artist

Colleen Krieger

I was raised on the Southern Oregon Coast and found my love for drawing early in life. My 8th grade teacher noticed my aptitude for drawing and assigned me many art projects. In high school I took art classes.

I met and married the love of my life in 1968 and moved to Klamath Falls. There I met Mr. George McMann, a renowned artist. He both inspired and mentored me. For a short period, Mr. McMann taught me about oil painting. It wasn't long before we moved back to Gold Beach (1 mile north and 750 feet of elevation away from where I grew up).

I put my art away for many years after a friend discouraged it. I raised my children, and worked hard on the family's cattle ranch and tree farm. To keep my artistic mind happy I designed wedding, birthday, and anniversary cakes. Many years later as the kids grew up I began sketching pen and pencil flowers which grew around the ranch. My friends and family, especially my husband, encouraged me to put my sketches on cards.

In many ways I am self taught having read many books on the topic, experimenting with trial and error sketches, and just plain working hard. I've learned about analyzing the object, its shape, color and what makes it look more life like. My favorite part of sketching is attempting to bring a sketch to life through shadowing.

I encourage everyone to develop their inner talents and do what you love. I recommend you surround yourself with friends and family who support and encourage you.
